Flag of Portugal  , Faro,
Monday, July 30, 2012

A short sail along the coast to the anchorage near Faro.  Faro itself is not reachable by yachts so you have to catch a ferry.
We arrived at sunset so we dropped anchor (so easy now) and settled down for the night.  In the morning we were going to move on but the tides were not going to be with us leaving the river estuary so we decided to go ashore for a wander.

This little piece of heaven on the Algarve is a tiny fishing village built on the sand dunes.  When we got ashore we found a community of fishermen working away in an area that had been designated as a nature reserve.  There was a cafe or 3, a small shop, a church, a gas/gaz store (a hut actually) and small pathway between the small homes built on the dune.

We had a wander and bought a new gas cylinder and a few things in the shop then sat down in the cafe for a drink.  A beer and a coke came to 2.10€.  Steve spotted a crane standing on a dune so I went off to try and get a photo.

The peacefulness here was so good after our previous stops that we could easily have stayed longer but the tide called us back to the boat and at the turn we set off once again to our next anchorage.

This community was going to be disbanded so the locals fought for their survival and won by refusing to vote in the elections.  Now in 2006 they had fresh water and electricity to the island.

A wonderful spot if ever you go near.
