Since starting this trip I have felt a bit guilty.
I love nature, the environment, the planet, life as it is now...
But while travelling I am making some huge emissions.
And these are a really big contributor to Global Warming and Climate Change.
And the more we travel, the more we see the impacts - land slides threatening buses, and local villages, glaciers we canīt visit anymore coz theyīve melted, endangered species, whose ranges are already reduced, becoming further threatened by extreme weather... it goes on and on.

So, we have decided to go Carbon Neutral, starting with 2007, the year of our largest emissions. Iīm very scared at what the emissions will be.

I think Ewan put me onto this site (thanks!) which helps you calculate how many tonnes of CO2 you emitted in the year, then calculates how many trees you need to plant to counteract those tonnes. Very cool idea, even better you can pay someone else to plant the trees, Men of the Trees, we love those men. Weīll see what the damage is first, and perhaps do some planting of our own on return to Oz.

It was actually a bit difficult becuase we arenīt in a house as such, but I think it still counts becuase we are in hotels (probably use MORE power with aircon, towel washing etc) and using restaurants (which have BIG fridges and stoves). And we don~t have a car, but use a lot of long distance buses (which must be better???) but just using normal house emissions for the year and hoping itīs the same.

Drumroll...
And our tonnes for 2007 are - 59.38 . That makes me feel fat. Anyone got any figures to compare?

Thatīs 357 trees. A little forest. That will feel good to plant Iīm sure. (Mum and Dad, you need some reveg along the creek, right? You have two happy, unemployed volunteers in December!)

This would cost $979.77 AUD through Men of the Trees. Probably far less for the average punter, I think Ewanīs emssions for the year were $70! We can make that our aim for next year when we are on bicycles.

Ciao for now from the repentant polluters.
