Today, we woke up late (10am is sleeping in for us these days), breakfast(bagels and muffins - a big improvement from our Atlanta hostel's donuts), and started out to explore New Orleans' French Quarter. Unfortunately, it was raining as we started out, but it didn't last all day, thank goodness. We spent most of the day walking around the Quarter, exploring the varied architecture of the houses and buildings - lots of interesting wrought iron railings, floor to ceiling shuttered windows, and brightly colored houses. We also toured the Hermann-Grima house, a house first owned by an upper-class American family in the 1830s. Since we were the only two there, we got a private tour, which was awesome. We're starting to learn so much about early 19th century houses from all these house tours! It was really cool to learn about the differences between the Creole and American houses and see how differently families of this timeframe lived. After a long day of touring Ethan took and a nap and Jill, the fish, went for the swimming pool. It was all laughs until she slammed her head against the side of the pool (with a red bump to prove her battle scar). After some time, Jill was finally able to rise Ethan out of bed and we were headed out on the town again. First we stopped at an authentic Cajun restaurant called Coop's Place. We ate fried alligator bites, Creole shrimp and rabbit jambalaya. The bites and jambalaya was excellent! Next, we headed to Pat O'Brien's pub for a taste of the original Hurricane drink which came in 22oz glasses that we kept as souvenirs! The place is a classic piano bar so we watched two players duel it out musically and take song suggestions. As their finale, Ethan requested Great Balls of Fire, where one of the guys got a little wacky and stood on the piano stool as he played. To finish the night, Jill and Ethan saw them filming a movie on Bourbon Street . . . maybe you will see us as the extras in the new film. Instead of going to graduate school, Ethan decided this might launch his movie career.
