Where I stayed
With one less day to spend on Bali we gave up on plans to see the island and experience Balinese culture and instead deposited ourselves on the main strip of beach to recuperate for a couple of days. The beach starts in the cheap n' nasty but very lively resort of Kuta and as you head north to Legian it gets a bit cleaner and tamer. Further north still and you're in
Seminyak - Four Seasons and Oberoi land. We divined the middle course and checked into the Grand Kumala Hotel in Legian.
The hotel was magnificent, quiet and friendly and set in lovely grounds with two swimming pools. Everything was decorated with Hindu statues which gave the rooms and the whole resort some character.
Cue some chilling by the pool, dodging first-time surfers in the sea, and filling our faces with some great oven baked pizzas at the Italian next door for a couple of days. The only time we ventured more than 10 minutes from the hotel was to grab some sunset cocktails up in trendy Seminyak at Ku De Ta, a beachfront bar/restaurant where the beautiful people (and us) go to see and be seen. It is a very cool place and does serve a great cocktail. We stayed to watch the sun dip below the horizon but then quietly snuck out before the Long Island Iced Teas destroyed our budget for the week.
Sufficiently relaxed we were ready for our Air Asia debut to Kota Kinabalu in Malaysian Borneo, unfortunately we had to go via Jakarta so it would be a full day travelling, but hey, this is Indonesia.
