I was up and out just after 6, and at the park before 7. There was no one at the main gate, so I resolved to mail in a donation later, and continued on. There’s a loop that goes around the whole park, and I started out in the sandy beach direction. I stopped at one marked trail, but it was called the Precipice trail and was an insanely steep vertical scramble. Maybe some other time.
I drove on a bit further to sandy beach, and was the first one there that morning. I was
quickly joined by a surfer and two photographers.
I have a lovely memory of the surfer in his wetsuit with his board stuck in the sand beside him staring out at the ocean, and contemplating the waves.
I felt in a much better mood after this, so I took a walk from there to the blow hole further up the point. There were lots of nice seascapes and it was a very pleasant walk as there wasn’t any traffic at that hour of the day. Wonderfully, it wasn’t raining. The blowhole turned out to be a deep groove in the rock where the force of the waves was funnelled in and directed upwards. It was fun to watch, and I wandered back enjoying the lack of rain. Once at the car I continued around the loop taking photos of various attractions.
Since I jugded that I had enough time, I went up cadilac mountain which was instantly foggy, becoming worse until at the top there were some tourbusses enjoying the non-existent view. All the passangers wandering around in the thick fog looked like extras in a cheap horror film. On the way down, I stopped at another lookout wich was clean of the fog and had a view of…the tops of the clouds.
After returning to the hotel, we headed into town and drove a loop through Bar Harbour. It looked very interesting but we didn’t stop.
The drive on Highway 1 north wasn’t as good as I’d expected. The view isn’t particularly scenic and there’s almost no view of the water. I managed to pick up more US chocolate bars to add to my collection (they have quite a few I’ve never seen before).
We didn’t get lunch until after we’d crossed over the border because mom wanted a seaside restaurant, I wanted lobster, and dad wanted to keep going. We finally stopped in St Stevens
NB, and the lady at the Info counter directed us to the waterfront where we could finally eat, and all were satisfied. From there my parents both fell asleep, and missed one of the better vistas of the trip.
After that it was a straight (if long) run to Truro NS where we were staying the night. We grabbed an uninspiring dinner from Wendys, where dad abandoned his salad with all the good bits still in it which I proceeded to pick out and eat.
We stayed in Walton NS for a few days at my mom’s house there, and then headed back by plane.
All told a pretty decent vacation even if the weather wasn’t that great.
