Paid about 50 quid for our ticket to Santiago from Havana by train (tourists get charged a fortune for travel). It turned up an hour and a hlaf late, then took 2 hoursa longer than expected so 18hrs after getting to the train station we finally arrived in Santiago de Cuba. I had a fever on the train as well so wasnt ion the best of moods and its much much hotter at this end of the island.

Went to Casa de la Musica for a live cabaret show, a dance and a drink, was a really, really good night.

Saw Santiago Zoo, where a 'guide' (just some guy who was wandering round) latched on to me and showed me round which was helpful as nothing was signposted. he knew all the animals names and how old they were. My spanish isnt brilliant but i'm pretty sure he said he'd been wandering the zoo 'helping' tourists for thirty two years. They ahve lions, tigers, hyenas, a rhino, python, monkeys, zebra, peacocks, a bear, and, oh yeah, ducks de inglaterra!!

We also spent one day by the becah, turqouise water on one side, the Sierra Maestra mountins in the other (where Fidel, Che et al waged their guerilla war campaign against the American funded Batista regime). Ate mangoes, coconuts and was offered a lobster and the biggest red snapper i've ever seen.

We also went to a local hip hop night, it actually turned out to be a strange mix of euro trance, golden oldies and hip hop which the cubans seemed to lap up. Had a mojito which in Cuba is essentially is a glass full of rum, a slice of lime and some manky mint leaves.

The next day we spent in the mountains, trekked up there pretty much from sea level in flip flops, and spent the day lying in the pool under a waterfall. we were brought the best fish and rice meal by some local and this was probably my favourite day in Cuba.
