I realize that moving through countries unfamiliar is a means of learning about other peoples and cultures. However, perhaps even more pertinent, is that it is a way of learning about those we love best - our traveling companions - occasionally our traveling adversaries!

Take Nadeige, for example. She's always talked in her sleep. We are regularly woken in hotel rooms by her muffled murmuring. However, this sleep talk too has evolved - in a more than distressing way. Last night I was woken from a profound sleep by my lovely daughter: "Holy sh*t. Where the f*€k is my camera."

She's no longer a sleep talker, she's become a sleep swearer! (Oh, the shame!) This bodes well for the remaining part of our holiday with my daughter, the sailor!

We drove from San Jose to La Fortuna this morning. The roads wind up and down steep hills, with little or no shoulder. The trip of just over 100 km took three hours. La Fortuna is what you might expect of a busy tourist town. But it made for an interesting afternoon walk and the Costa Ricas we met are unequivocally amicable.

Tomorrow we go canyon emerging and white water rafting! (Mom, if you're reading this, tomorrow we are going for tea and a quiet stroll.)
