Bungalow Bay - Magnetic island
Overnight Greyhound from Cairns to Townsville. Didn't hang around as I caught the first ferry to Magnetic Island. Checked into Bungalow Bay YHA = triangular dorms - and was on the beach by ~7.30am - with only the odd dog walker - and or course heavy rain showers - sadly the mangrove trees don't provide much protection from the rain :(
Checked out Horseshoe Bay with loads of sand dollars, cuttlefish and oyster shells. Also saw some cool red crabs aerating their burrows in the mud.
'Celebrated' the rain and all-round sogginess with pancakes and a massive helping of Nutella! Later I wanted to trek to 2 rather nice beaches - however I couldn't even set-off as a new river was pouring itself out at the starting location! Spent the afternoon being attacked by the rainbow-coloured lorikeets..
Up early and bussed about the island - hitting Picnic Bay looking like a drowned rat. Fed the wallabies at Arcadia - ~15 little fellows sneaking around the rocks at the bay - they have these strange little dolly-like arms. Checked out a good waterfall and lunched at Alma Bay. Staggered up The Forts - with concrete gun emplacements & lookout towers - a good place for bats & soggy koalas. From this view point I was able to glimpse the 'rather nice beaches' Florence Bay & Radical Bay! Spent the afternoon swimming/hammocking under trees full of squawking lorikeets & a CCTV-like kookaburra. A very enjoyable evening of pizza and red wine with the 'dorm' girls - as rain lashed down on to the metal corrugated roofing..
Returned back to Townsville - disgusting weather & some disgustingly drunk people as it was St Patrick's Day. Once more quite a few threatening Aboriginals about. Castle Hill drifted in and out of focus through the cloud of rain - probably a good view on a sunny day?! Checked out the botanical gardens - fabulous scents from something in there! Found my 1st bath in 2 months - read and did nails - nearly felt human once more.. :)
Took the Greyhound from Townsville to Airlie Beach - along flooded roads.
