Where I stayed
Kia Orana!
Next stop the Cook Islands – our little piece of paradise! After the fast-pace of LA things slowed down a little. After a 10 hour flight we touched down on the island of Rarotonga – but were greeted by a tropical storm (the local singer in the middle of the luggage carousel made up for it)! Fortunately after a couple of hours sleep we awoke to sunshine and enjoyed 4 days of tranquillity…
A few highlights:
Location location location
We stayed on the picturesque Muri beach lagoon in a guesthouse just off the beach, complete with hammocks and bananas we could pick fresh each day. We'd definitely recommend staying there!
Cycling
We hired bikes and cycled round the island, exploring many beaches, and a waterfall. A great way to get around on the one road that hugs the coastline – but not so good for our backsides. We could hardly walk by the end of the day!
Kayaking
The best way to explore the lagoon in its full glory was by kayak. We kayaked around small islands stopping off on various beaches – eating a coconut along the way! I don’t think there are any words to describe how amazing the scenery is there – a real picture postcard!
Highland Paradise
In order to experience the culture of the island and learn more about the history of the local people, we went on a 'Highland Paradise’ night in a mountain village. This included a great feast and show – the chief was a fantastic host.
Food
Eating out isn’t cheap in the Cook Islands (a lot is shipped in from NZ) but we enjoyed some fantastic meals, all presented beautifully. Our favourite restaurant was Sails – right on Muri beach.
