We had a romantic Valentines night drinking cocktails in Riobamba.  Then we got up reaaally early and got a bus to this really strange place called Alausi - it was strange and grown men threw water balloons at us in the street (we're hoping this was due to Carnival rather than personal!).

As it's South America, the train was late...possibly due to landslides in front of the train which apparently caused the passengers to have to dig out the train.  Also we were sad because you're not allowed to ride on the roof of the train anymore (this is rumoured to be the result of 2 decapitations...but who knows the truth??). The train ride was impressive if slightly dissappointing.  The highlight is meant to be a section called the Devil's Nose but we didn't even notice when this section was.  Instead we made up stories about humanoids hiding in the hills to make things more exciting.  The actual track was impressive...the route was through crazy mountains but they were the same mountains we see every day from the bus.  It was fun watching the bus conductor jump on and off the train throwing branches off and on the track for some reason that we couldn't quite work out but it was obviously highly technical.

Hm that's quite scary...I rode on the roof of that!
What will the cushion people do for a living now! Hm anyway sounds like fun, Alausi is a bit of a random town from what I remember.
Did you get derailed???
