Flag of Thailand  , Krabi,
Tuesday, March 1, 2011

Most of our day yesterday was spent traveling to Krabi. We had a lot of trouble trying to get our bags on the flight because the weight restrictions are so much lower on domestic flights than the international.  Tam and I had all of our gear divvied up between a few of our friends because the weight penalty was extremely high.  However,we soon forgot all the troubles we had getting there when we arrived to Krabi because it was gorgeous.  We had just enough time to walk around a little bit before grabbing some dinner with the group.

The next day we woke up early for our first kayaking excursion.  We got to kayak through a couple caves with stalactites hanging from the ceiling.  One even looked like a mermaid and this one I could actually decipher what it was see if you can too.  And the last cave we had to get out of our kayaks to check out, but it had pictures inside it that date back to 3,000 years ago.  The clearest one you can see they call the big headed ghost.  It was cool but I do not have a clue where they got the name.  Afterwards our guides wife and sister-in-law made us lunch.  It was a gourmet meal and the best part was we got to drink coconut milk directly from the coconut.  I didn't even know I liked coconut milk but it was so good.  After lunch we went to a fresh water hole where we got to go swimming and use a rope swing.

When we made it back to our hotel and we went to have a dinner down on the beach.  The view was great until a huge thunderstorm blew in.  The lightning put on an amazing show.   It actually kind of reminded me of home, which was a nice surprise.  Unfortunately most restaurants in the area are open air so everyone in the front of the restaurant got drenched.  After the rain stopped we decided to check out a little of the local night life.  The bar across from our hotel had kept us up late the night before with a live band so instead of getting upset we decided to join in the fun.  We went down a row of bars and soon learned more than I would have liked about Thailand.  Here they have a third gender referred to as ladyboys.  (Some restaurants even have separate bathrooms just for them.)  Ladyboys are transvestites but some are really hard to tell if they are real women or not.  In addition each bar has a group of girls hanging out towards the front that work for the bar (aka prostitutes).  Pretty much they hit on all the guys that go to the bar and go home with them.  Afterwards the guy has to pay the bar for taking the girl away during business hours.  It seemed like a very weird way to get around calling it prostitution.  But because of this the guys never stepped more than a few feet away from us to ward off the ladyboys and bar girls.  It was kind of fun to watch them squirm!
