My low expectations, combined with not really doing much research on the place, were the perfect mix to be blown away by the beauty of the city. The city was peaceful and inviting. It was colorful and full of nicely done street art. Also, since it was on a hill, there were many interesting places to reach and look out into the harbor*. And it was a place where you could both get comfortably lost and be inspired. (Even the Wikitravel entry advises people just to explore.) I just wish that I could have spent more than a couple of hours there. Will possibly be back for another visit in the near future.
One other thing worth mentioning is that it involves quiet a bit of stair climbing. So for anyone thinking to visit, just make sure that you have the right shoes on. I wore flip-flops because it was very warm and by the end of it, I think I would have been better off with more athletic shoes.
*The history of the city is that it was the main harbor that ships would visit before the construction of the Panama Canal. Therefore, it grew to be very wealthy, as with many port cities.
