I may have failed to mention that I stopped by a city outside of Shanghai called Suzhou.  It is acclaimed as the "Venice of the East" - where philosophers were inspired and where beautiful girls frolicked.

Only having an afternoon there, I can't really write a treatise... though I can say that it was definitely worth the visit.  It's only about 45 min by train from Shanghai.  There were many couples who had just gotten married and shops which offered turnkey photo services right near the canals.  It seemed like this was one of the cities where couples should be.

The canals did remind me of Venice in a way.  It may not have been nearly as elaborate or royal, however, it did carry a charm.  The weather was a bit chilly which at least made it less crowded.  A lazy boat ride through the old town was a nice and quiet getaway from the chaotic traffic-filled cities.  All in all, it was an enjoyable time - so long as you do not go alone (luckily, I didn't ;-).
