Last shower for 3 days this morning - sob! Visit Tashilhunpo monastery, which apparently is a big deal in the Tibetan Buddhist world. It must be, cos we arrive at 9.25 and there is a crowd of people waiting for it to open at 9.30 OMG, I'm like a monastery groupie! We join the throng and make our way round, partly carried along by the locals and fighting to stay upright. The 75ft Maitriya Buddha is very impressive though.

Drive down to Sakya, a little Tibetan village. I know i keep banging on about it, but SWEET JESUS it's cold; every place seems to get a bit colder as we get higher in altitude. This is not doing my ability to breathe any favours.

So guess what? That's right, another monastery visit. Except this was better - firstly beacuse it was the end of the day so there wasn't 1000 locals shoving you to the floor (just gotta be a bit tougher!) And also because these were cool, friendly monks! They stop and have photos, and also want to see what the pictures look like. We then ascend up a steep hill for an hour to visit the nunnery (see, women always on top!). These nuns are lush! They are friendly and happy to get visitors - to be fair, they probably don't get many. Best bit was watching the nun lighting the traditional yak butter candles - while gasbagging on her mobile. Who can she possibly be ringing and what can they possibly be talking about?? "What you up to tonight?" "Nothing, thought I'd stay in with some candles, read a book." "Sounds good, me too." They were very sweet though - maybe I've missed my calling...
