My tour of China wrapped up in Hong Kong. I absolutely loved Hong Kong - it felt so much more international than other cities in China. No one stared or wanted to take pictures of us - refreshing anonymity! Also, the city is so much cleaner and quieter than anywhere else I visited in China. There is a lot of green space and so much to see. In Hong Kong they drive on the left side of the road - a remnant of British rule - AND they obey the traffic and pedestrian crossing signals - so refreshing to cross the street without putting my life at risk! While I only spent about 48 hours there I really think it's somewhere that I would enjoy living - I would definitely consider a posting there in the future!
It was sad to say good-bye to my group - we'd had a lot of fun together in China. Everyone was going their separate ways - most people were heading off to Thailand, other parts of South-East Asia and Australia. We had a great group dinner our last night together - we literally sat right on the street on little plastic stools! After dinner we found a bar (an Irish pub, of all things!) and settled in for some VERY expensive drinks. Luckily a random American guy came over to our table (we were mostly girls!) and ended up buying all of our drinks for the evening so we left in very good spirits indeed!
The next day was my last day in Hong Kong so I did some sightseeing - rode the Star Ferry across the harbour, took the extremely steep tram car up to Victoria Peak and then went to see the huge sitting Buddha on Lantau island, which involved a very scenic cable car ride. Our group all met up again for the evening Hong Kong harbour cruise and light show and then one final unofficial group dinner. I had to be up at 5:30 am for my flight to Malaysia on Friday so I had an early night. Ciao China!
