Arequipa was our second stop in Peru. One of the most beautiful colonial cities in Peru, the city had suffered a large earthquake since Ian had last been there. He was therefore interested to see if the city had changed (and whether all the bars he had frequented we were still there ..)

The main focus of our visit was the stunning Colca Canyon located 4 hours drive away from the city. Deeper than the Grand Canyon, but failing by a few meters to claim the title of the world's deepest canyon, it is the home of Andean Condors and one of the best places in South America to view these majestic (but - and unfortunately it has to be said, rather ugly) vultures.

Deciding half a week was a suitable period of rest after Huaraz we embarked on a 2 day trek down into, and then back out of, the steeply walled canyon. The reward at the bottom was an overnight stay at an oasis - an idyllic taste of paradise after the six hour trek, complete with straw cabins, palm trees and natural pools. The drawback was a 3 a.m. start the next morning for the 1000m ascent out of the canyon - we still weren't learning ....
