Straight after our amazing thrashing of Croatia (well, almost thrashing but good enough to do the job), we headed back to base and met a very self-opinionated German woman and her quite embarrassed husband. She was giving us lectures on how poorly we treat our Indigenous people (witnessed from her one week trip to Uluru) ... lucky I had lost my voice (from being sick and screaming the Aussie's on), otherwise I would not have been as tame as Pete and our American friend Tami were towards her. She even began to tell Tami that American's don't know how to make doughnuts...I mean, come on !
After that, we went straight to Interlaken - much to Pete's fascination, as he too has fallen in love with the towns in Switzerland ... but detests the price of everything. We arrived during the Swiss game on Friday 23rd - not a good plan if you actually want to get checked into your room. We were staying above a bar and the owner of the Inn kept handing out free beer's whenever the Swiss scored (Pete was content, but I was even more sick and yes, a little grumpy) and the owner couldn't get his eyes off the screen long enough to give us our keys.
We were all booked in and set to go white water rafting on grade 4.5 rapids down the Lutschine River.... but we were too sick, especially me. So we begrudgingly decided to cancel that and catch a train to Grindelwald and climb to the Upper Glacier. We packed a picnic lunch and set out on the two hour climb (not the best idea if you can barely breathe but the fresh air up the top worked wonders for me).
We sat on the top of the small mountain we climbed and overlooked the town and the glacier. It was an awesome view and every 15 minutes or so, there would be an amazing rumbling from inside the mountain and rocks and water would come gushing out. It sounded as if a thunderstorm was going on below us, it was great. Though it has definitely made me anti-cable car's and thus I made us trek an extra hour down, rather than get the four- minute cable car back to the village.
The next day we went to Lauterbrunnen and went to the Trummelbach falls - the only internal glacial falls accessible to human beings. There are over 10 waterfalls and they spew out 20 000 litres of water a second !!! The force was so magnificent and humbling and the sound was ear-aching. But what a fantastic time overall - besides the over-jacked prices for pizza.
Then we were off to watch the Aussies (in what should have been an easy win over the Italians), wondering what the vibe at Leichhardt would be like tonight...
