Brazil is known for its big parties - especially Carnival however the best NYE celebration in Brazil is on Copacabana beach, and draws up to 2.5 million people each year. The fireworks display is massive and everyone traditionally wears white to bring good luck for the new year.
(Other traditions include jumping over 7 waves and making a wish, drinking champagne and bringing flowers to put in the ocean to appease the ocean deity.)

As our hostel was on the other side of the lagoon and away from the beach the hostel owners had organised a big party at one of their other hostels in Ipanema, walking distance to Copacabana beach.

We had gone out the night before so we spent the day relaxing, sleeping and eating. Around 5 we went to get showered and ready (and to avoid the shower rush) and at 7 a mini bus took us to hostel Bonita in Ipanema.
Bonita was pretty nice, a buffet dinner had been set up and the bar had the Caiprinha's ready. We just sat around drinking, chatting and mingling till 11 when it was time to wander down to the beach,

The beach was PACKED! People everywhere and all dressed in white  - Sensation eat your heart out.

We found a spot on the beach near one of the massive stands that were set up so we could listen to the music and not miss the countdown.
It was pretty cool standing on the beach waiting for midnight, listening to samba and people dressed in white as far as the eye could see...

Midnight came and we counted down from 10 to 1 then the fire works began...the were amazing and went for at least 40 minutes.

The rest of the night was spent dancing on the beach to samba, going swimming in our clothes and drinking beer.
Around 4 Bec and i wandered off to find some food and then walked back to Ipanema to find a taxi to take us home.

We did think about staying on the beach to watch the sunrise but we were tried and wet and looking forward to a warm bed.
