I was meant to go swimming today at Delta College, near here. But having managed to miss a turning then get lost – even with a satnav – trying to find the college, before I knew where I was it was 1130 and there was not time to go.

So I came to Starbucks instead.  The friendly lady – everyone in America seems to be friendly – who served me, asked where my accent was from, and then went on to tell me Saginaw was not the best place in the States to come to.  I felt that a bit harsh.  I can't see that wherever you go in the world, each particular place won't have something that makes it special.  Driving this morning, the trees here looked pretty special to me – big old weeping willows for example.  Turkeys walking in packs across the road.  Even the road kill is different from home.  The common one is an animal about the size of a cat, short front legs, not much of a snout, no tail to speak of.  Like badgers in the UK, they seem to get it most of the time.
