Our next stop along the East Capes Coastal road was Gisborne. On the way we visited several small towns of Te Araroa, Tokomaru Bay and Tolga Bay to get a better feel of the region and their culture.
Our first photo stop was a visit to an old traditional Carved Maori Church - St Marys Memorial Church in Tikitiki.
Our next stop was to Tolanga Bay where the longest pier in New Zealand is situated - some of the lads decided to jump into the sea from the pier and swim back but the water was a bit too cold for everyone else so we just went for a paddle then sat in the sun.
We stopped for lunch at Tokomaru Bay where we had fish and chips by the beach!
Our overnight stop was at Rayvons Surf Shack which was just across the road from the beach. So when we arrived mid afternoon we headed straight down to the beach for a bit of sunbathing, we also decided to get into the sea even though it was still quite cold, but once you get splashed several times by big waves then its not so bad! After our group meal of spag bol and a taste of shark that had been caught fresh that afternoon we sat by an open log fire and sang some songs.
The next morning at 5:15am we woke up and went to sit on the beach to watch the sunrise as Gisborne is the first place in the world to see the sunrise each morning. So on the 1st feb 2012 we were the first people in the world to watch the sunrise!!!! We then went back to bed for a couple of hours then went into Gisborne town to look around and take some photos.
We then headed back and jumped off the bus in Whakatane...................................................
