Islas del Maiz or Corn Islands are some 70 kilometres off the coast of mainland Nicaragua and are made up of two islands. Big Corn is 6 square kilometres, whilst Little Corn is just 1.6 square kilometres; both with idyllic beaches and views across the Caribbean Sea. I chose to spend the majority of my time on Little Corn, which had the big draw of there being no cars on the island. After a pleasant boat ride from the dock on Big Corn, I arrived on Little Corn just as the sun was setting. I'd decided to splurge a little and booked into Casa Iguana, where I had my own little casita right on the water
I did however awake, with alarm, at 1.30am that first night; to the casita shaking and high winds powering through the open windows. I couldn't be certain whether it was an earthquake, the roary thunder or the sheer volocity of the winds, making the ground move under my bed. I'd felt small tremors in both David, Panama and whilst at school in Antigua, Guatemala; but in the pitch black, in the middle of the night, it was really quite scary. My thoughts moved to the close proximity of the Caribbean sea and the distinct lack of high ground on this tiny island. When the rain finally arrived minutes later however, the wind dropped to nothing and my nerves were calmed as I was enveloped in an incredible downpour, which was strangely placating in its volume. A reminder that whilst I'd arrived in scorching sun, rainy (and indeed hurricane) season was not yet over in the Caribbean.
A lot of people come to the islands to dive, but that wasn't on my agenda, so I simply awoke each day and caught the beautiful sunrise over the sea; before meandering local restaurants for fresh grilled fish or awesome ceviche. The coastline was idyllic sandy beaches and warm turquoise seas; where I used the time to bask in the sun, read books and blog more. The rest of my time on Little Corn, was passed in this way, as I succumbed to their pace of life. On my last day I migrated across to Big Corn for one day, though I stayed on the beach away from the town, so my tranquil time continued. It was a beautiful place to do nothing, but I was ready to move on to my next action packed week; next stop is an all girl Surf Camp, in San Juan Del Sur.
