Flag of Guatemala  , San Marcos,
Tuesday, October 22, 2013

The Bing Crosby song came to mind when I came to write this post, as San Marcos is definitely a place for doing (next to) nothing. A dip in the lake with the sun streaming through; reading a book or morning yoga, amongst the lush gardens of our hostel; a cosy log fire and a movie on a Sunday evening and lots of options for wholesome veggie food on offer.

Our arrival in San Marcos was not very relaxing, with a precarious tuk tuk ride in the driving rain, accompanied by thunder and lightning. The setting on the beautiful lake however, couldn't fail to relax immediately and the journey soon ebbed away. All the accomodation is hidden down little lanes in a warren of rough stone paths. We found a lovely hostel, with a "dorm" that looked more like a ski lodge, with just six beds, split over two large floors and a perfect little balcony on our floor. We unpacked, settled in and didn't stray very far for the next four days; just content to kick back and relax. We also had visits from Antigua schoolmates, so the days passed by nicely.

Thursday was market day in nearby Chichicastanango, so we decided to liven ourselves up and head there. Rather than take a shuttle we took the longer, but more scenic route of boat and chicken bus. As we cruised across sun dappled water, alongside lake-side retreats and pretty countryside, it was definitely the right choice. The chicken bus route was a winding one, up and around the hills overlooking the lake and three buses later we arrived in Chichi. The market itself is held twice a week and is a bustling, brightly coloured melee, which attracts both tourists and locals alike. We wandered for a few hours, marvelling at the craftmanship in the beautiful textiles available. I managed to leave without splurging, however Anna had arms full by the time we were retracing our steps back down to the lake, this time in the pouring rain once more!

Next stop is still on the lake, but over to the more lively San Pedro for the weekend.
