This town is definitely one of my all time favorites. Despite my bad luck with the crappy weather, it was cloudy and misty again today, there's so much cool stuff to see and do. Moniek and I rented bikes and rode to an animal refuge. We got there right as the tour started and the guide was talking about snakes and I was looking around and one of the girls in the tour group was holding a monkey, i got so excited that I gasped and everyone turned around. I didn't realize I did it so loud so i looked around like it wasnt me! But yes, I did get to hold a howler monkey!! See the attached picture. I had Moniek use her camera. The refuge houses howler monkeys, sloths, frogs, snakes, owls, some kind of jungle cat and caymans (like a small gator) all which are injured or orphaned at a young age. You get to walk into a room where all the monkeys are (there were about 5 of them) and they just jump all over you and crawl on your head and one of them was eating Moniek's camera string while i was trying to take a picture! One of them hung out with us throughout the whole tour. I got to hold her and she crawled on my head and wrapped her tail around my neck then kinda went to sleep. She woke up and started climbing down my back so I was trying to catch her and the little shit bit me! She didnt' draw blood and there are no diseases to worry about, but it did kinda make me nervous, She did it to everyone if they tried to keep her from getting down, but she apologized later by jumping back onto me and curled up in my arms. Some guy tried to hold her but the monkey liked me better and came back to me. Funny how a monkey can make you feel special! :) Every few days the refuge will release the young monkeys into the wild to introduce them to other monkeys and then at the end of the day the staff will call for them and if they aren't ready to stay in the wild then they come back. So the monkeys choose when they are ready, not the caretakers, which i thought was cool. Then the guide brought out 2 sloths, one 3 toed, one 2 toed. There are actually a lot of differences between the two. So the monkeys were definitely the highlight of my day, but after that we continued on to Manzanillo for lunch. There's not much there bc it's a national park so its just a jungle and swamps. That might be where I go to volunteer with the sea turtles, but not sure yet. On our way back we stopped at a cacao farm because I wanted some fresh chocolate. All the cacao is grown organically and the only ingredients in the chocolate are cacao and sugar cane, no preservatives, milk or anything else. It tasted much different than your normal hershey bar and was a little grainy, but I thought it was really good. I wanted to get a few bars but they would've melted in a few hours.  The scenery on the bike ride was awesome. A lot of green vegetation, hibiscus flowers etc.. and you could hear the howler monkeys up in the trees. It was kinda hard to look for them because u had to keep your eyes on the road to dodge all the potholes or else you'd be taking a nose dive. I also ran into a sloth crossing the street on my way back. They really do move extremely slow. I counted and he took 1 step every second (like a mississippi second)!! Some guy stopped and picked him up and took him across the street, otherwise cars would've been backed up for like 45 minutes. Then i took a walk down the beach and swam a little bit in the shallower area bc the sea was pretty rough today. We went into to town and had dinner. For such a small town there are plenty of restaurants and bars to hang out at. All of them are open air and most had music playing. I head back to San Jose tomorrow and get to meet my new family!
