18.04.2010

As I had not prepared the thermoses with hot water, we decided to have coffee in a café, along the road somewhere. We usually use one thermos for coffee or tea when we stop for a break, and the other thermos, which has a wider neck, we often add some two minute noodle to for lunch.

This day we fueled up at Half Moon and rode into a coffee shop with chairs outside, it looked very welcoming.  Des met up with Dirk and Emily, who were in Half Moon to purchase plants for their property ten miles away. We had coffee with them and stayed to chat for about an hour. They are both motorbike enthusiasts and very interested in our trip. Dirk is from Germany and Emily the Philippines, and both are now US citizens. They also intend doing a long motorcycle trip together. We encouraged them to push through their plans, and not leave it till they are our age. (They seemed around 40 years of age)

Highway 1 took us to the outskirts of San Francisco which were very hilly. There were many traffic lights on inclines and descents and I was starting to get very nervous about going across the Golden Gate Bridge. I had been looking forward to it, but the traffic was now very thick and closely packed. Stopping and starting on the hills was taking its toll on my left hand (the previously broken wrist), and it was about 2pm and we hadn't stopped for lunch yet. The city was looming all around, no more countryside. All the lanes on the fast flowing highway were full and we could see the huge orange bridge structure in the distance ahead of us by about 5 miles. I was really getting butterflies, I think because of all the noise and speed all around.

Finally we were on the bridge, it was such a buzz. Here I was, riding across the Golden Gate Bridge on my birthday, I’ll never forget it.
