4.4.2010

Des and I continued following the grey ribbon around the world with super clean bikes and riding gear. The highways are so large here in the United States. It was an easy ride from Brownsville to San Antonio on Route 77.

Moving from Highway 77 to Highway 10 was another story, I was in the lead at this stage. It's not that it was difficult getting onto the 10, it was just a whirlwind experience. We were travelling around at 110 kilometers per hour, along with the all the other vehicles on the highways.  We went over overpasses and under underpasses, trying to read each sign and gravitate towards El Paso 10, looping the loops in the amazing maze which seemed to work very smoothly. It was like being in a large tumble dryer and trying to keep looking out of the glass panel door. Once we were on the straight road to El Paso on the 10, I finally took a breath, I was pretty ridged with concentration. One wrong turn would have cost a lot of time and confusion, but all worked out OK.

Onward with the traffic we went, but it thinned out again the further we rode out of San Antonio. We’ve lost the advantage of being a novelty here in the US because everything on the road is bigger than us. There are many Harley Davidson riders here, more so than BMWs. The mobile homes are huge and seem to take minutes to overtake us they’re so long, and they’re all towing a car behind them.

The wild flowers growing along the sides of the highways and on the centre strip are incredible. All the colours imaginable are present in the random acres of flowers covering miles of the land between Brownsville and San Antonio.

We can easily do 500 kilometers per day on these straight, well maintained highways.

La Quinta Inn was just in off the highway and a good place to stop. It included breakfast and in room internet.

5.4.2010

Slept in till 8:30am, and Des wanted to get away by 6:30. No problem though, we still travelled 470 kilometers and stopped to chat to several people. Like everywhere we’ve been to, the people here are very friendly.

The day started at 20C degrees for us on the bike and finished up in the mid 30’s, that’s when we called it a day at the Budget Inn in Fort Stockton.
