24.03.2010

I prepared a bowl of sultana bran for our breakfast, as breakfast was not included in the $12.50 charge for the room. The two hotel dogs kept trying to come into our room as we were eating, and as we rode out of the driveway, one of them came charging at the bikes and snapping at our heels. She must have forgotten about the chicken and chips we fed her the previous evening. Ungrateful bitch.

We were planning to stop in El Cruce, Guatemala, just shy of the Belize border for the night, but the town was so small, it appeared not to have any accommodation, so we were forced to continue to Belize.

We got our tyres fumigated for the princely sum of $6 at the Belizian border and spent the next 45 minutes chatting and joking with the Customs official who was giving us a run down on good places to go in Belize. His offsider gave me her rasta plats Bob Marley hat to try on. The black dread locks suited me, I think. The Customs guy only gave us a visa for 4 days and said the paperwork would be more difficult if we wanted to stay any longer. We would have to officially import the bikes etc., etc. He asked if we had anything to declare and we said "no." Then to our surprise he asked “Are you sure about that, we don't want to see you being taken away with our silver bracelets, when the customs officers outside go through your things?”

On the steps of Customs House we sat and made our salad lunch because vegetables can’t go across the border and because it was after two. It was very hot by this time, so I took off my boots and socks to let my feet breathe. Des was kicking himself that he didn’t purchase the 1 litre bottle of Chivvas Regal advertised for $5.99US at the border, and spent the rest of the day complaining about it.

As we motored over to the inspection point, two customs officers asked us about our travels and asked us to open just one bag. “Any bag is OK”. Luckily, they didn’t keep us waiting too long. In fact they barely looked inside the bags.

Next stop, motorbike insurance. Ahhh, the office was air conditioned. This guy could take as long as he liked. In Belize the insurance cover for one week cost us $12 for each bike.

Twenty minutes from the border we stopped into a hotel called Rosa in San Ignacio.

l litre Chivas Regal for $5.99! I'd be complaining for a week if I'd missed out on that ... oh Des, what were you thinking?

... and I think the woman in charge of the hotel was the ungrateful bitch, particularly as her poor dogs harrass the guests for food!

I bet Des was thinking no room on the bike and if I fall over the bottle might break.

Where's the photo of you doing the Bob Marley thing?
