Where I stayed
Habana Riviera Hotel
The bus trip to Vinales Province was long and interesting. We were the last to be picked up at our hotel so we had to sit apart on the bus as there were no 2 seats together left. Des sat with Andy, who was studying in the US, and I sat with Kirsty from Finland. Sometimes it's good to sit apart as we learn things from other people and have more interesting stories to bring to the dinner table.
First stop: Rum making factory. Cuban rum is well known and considered the best. Cuba is also famous for cigars, coffee beans and sugar cane.
Second stop: Cueva Del Indio – Indian Cave. We had an opportunity to taste crushed sugarcane, as juice or with rum
Third stop: Mural de la Prehistoria. I wasn’t that impressed with the big blue mural, and felt it was a bit of tourist grab. However, I was pleased that someone had been enterprising enough to think of it and get busloads of tourists to come there to eat and drink. A cowboy came riding by on a Brahman bull, that was unique too, worth a tip. The food was OK. The driver had warned us that the menu was limited but we could have chicken or pork with beans and rice, chicken with rice and rice or pork with beans and beans, or any combination of the above.
Forth stop: Pinar Del Rio, a view over the River of Pines. Beautiful area, no more beautiful than we had been driving through all day though, Cuba is a picturesque country with lots of growth and good roads
Fifth stop: Tobacco processing plant. This was where they grow, dry and bundle the tobacco leaves in a drying house, to give to the government, which pays the growers a wage and then has the leaves processed, by hand, into cigars in a government run factory.
Des and I had a great day and wished we had booked more time in Cuba.
