Cast away
Having the plaster cast removed from my arm was such a relief for me, as I had become quite frustrated by it. I had been exercising my arm with the equipment at the local park, and felt it was getting quite strong.
When the cast was removed, my palm and thumb pad seemed to have shrunk and my wrist was stiff and frozen into one position. I was quite concerned about it when I first saw it, but it was lovely to be able to wash my hand and arm in Doctor's surgery. I thought I had developed 'cradle cap’ on my palm under the cast, it was that sore.
I had brought a wrist guard into Dr Hermes surgery, which my son Hamish sent from Australia, one like the skateboarders wear. Dr Hermes seemed a bit happier when he saw it because he actually wanted the cast left on for 44 days, and it was only 37 days at this stage. He chuckled at Claudia, who was with us to interpret, and said, "She’s a typical nurse, prepared about after-care". Dr Hermes said my arm and hand would swell up, now that the cast was removed, and it certainly has done that, and with swelling comes pain. But the pain was eased somewhat when Dr. Hermes asked Claudia to purchase a beautiful Christmas food basket for me, which Claudia presented at the her Christmas party that night. Thank you dear Doctor Hermes.
My hand has been so swollen, I have not been able to wear my wedding rings since Doctor removed them in surgery on the 4th November.
I slept for most of the rest of the day while Des finished the biography of Brett Maher, the great Australian Basketballer, which our daughter sent over in the parcel from Australia. We took down all the photos and mementoes from our grandchildren which we had stuck up all around the room, and started to pack our bags. Once again we added to the ditch list, as weight is such an issue with the bikes, especially now. My Portuguese dictionary and phrase book went. Funny but I never used the phrase “I have a cat and two Australian Budgerigars” which was in the phrase book.
Claudia came to pick us up for the Christmas party at 8pm. My arm was aching and swollen.
