MONTEVIDEO TO PUNTE DEL ESTE – DRIZZLING AND WARM - 1.11.09
The Hostel Palermo had a beautiful marble staircase, the most posh thing about the place, the rest was very, very basic, and we had to carry all our luggage down the stairs to load up the bikes which were stored at the local undercover carpark.
By 10:30am we were loaded (we would have liked to get away earlier, but the mozzie fiasco left us a bit 'drained') and ready to make a decent fist of it and go a good few kilometers. It was a lovely day for riding, overcast and warm. We passed some fantastic thatched roofed houses and varying quality of homes, mostly simple homes, until we reached Punte del Este which is literally Eastern Point, and is on the coast. Some of the real estate there is magnificent, especially the golf course. There is much high rise and most of the tall apartment complexes are reasonably new. We ate lunch on the beach. Beautiful, red, ripe and juicy tomato sandwiches. Real tomatoes, with flavor and soft skins, not genetically modified to travel well.
We pulled over to have a photo session at the 'fingers in the sand' monument, at the beach at Punte Del Este and could hardly get away from all the people who were interested in our trip. We had so many photos taken of us, on cameras and on mobile phones, it was getting embarrassing. We gave away a few koala clip-ons, which were a big hit.
The riding today was fabulous on the wide concrete roads along the esplanade. The different fragrances we encountered riding through the country were delicious and made one feel good to be alive. It was great to have covered a couple of hundred kilometers today and enjoy it so much. The BMW’s are performing well and are very comfortable to ride, particularly with the cruise pegs we have on the front of the bikes’ roll bars to give us another position for our feet. The Air Hawk inflatable seats we have, also help prevent botrot over long distances.
We settled in a dive of a Hotel which is usually rented by the hour! Unfortunately Des dropped his motorbike bringing it around the back of the Hotel as the ground was very marshy. He’s OK, no damage done, well, maybe a little bit to his pride.
