CRATING MOTORBIKES – EDWARDSTOWN SA – 6.10.09

It's a big job crating 2 motorbikes ready for air shipment. Des made the crates at our work place and strapped the bikes down securely, together with our riding gear, clothes and camping stuff. We loaded the crates onto our truck and took them to Baggage Masters at Underdale South Australia (SA) for Simon to store them ready for transport to the plane.  We were glad to see them on their way as it brought things one step closer to realizing our goal of riding from Pole to Pole.

CUSTOMS CHECK – UNDERDALE SA – 14.10.09

We thought we had seen the last of the bikes 'til we got to Buenos Aires, Argentina, but no…… Simon from Baggage Masters rang to tell us, Australian Customs wanted to have a look in our crates. This meant Des had to bring an electric drill to unscrew the crates so the Customs Officer could have a look inside. We asked what it was he was looking for,  I couldn’t imagine what we could possibly be smuggling out of SA. He said there’s a bit of a racket going on where some folk are shipping a crappy old bike out of the country and bringing in a brand new bike without paying import duty. Tisk, tisk.

The VIN numbers on the bikes were checked and matched with our Carnets.  The Customs Officer did a cursory inspection of our bikes and goods, goodness knows what else he was looking for. Everything was sighted, signed and sealed and the crates were, once again, ready for shipment.

YET ANOTHER CRATE CHECK – UNDERDALE SA – 14.10.09

Des woke up in a cold sweat in the middle of the night imagining that he had left the high pressure capsules which are used to inflate the motorbike tyres, in the toolkit, under the seat of my bike, in the crate. This could cause a nasty explosion when the plane’s hold got under pressure. So, down he went again, with the drill and undid the crate to retrieve the 3 capsules. Good job he remembered.
