Leaving Pokhara via Tandi

Namaste!

Chandra Pun was kind enough to organize a 3 day stop over in Chitwan National Park for us all. It sounded too good to be true so we jumped at the opportunity. He accompanied us out of town to make sure we took the right roads to the 'highway' and then found his own transport (with his two children who loved playing on the CB radio between our cars) back to Karma Guest House. We were met after a beautiful 5 hour, 140 kilometer, drive in Tandi by Kamal an employee of Rainbow Safari Resort, Sauraha, Chitwan National Park. He guided us the remaining 7 kilometers to the resort in Lou's car.

The accommodation was basic, but we were in the jungle after all. We had mosquito nets on the beds and cold showers if the sun didn't shine. Prakash Bhattarai was to be our guide while we were at the resort.

Our first foray into the Tharu village was accompanied by an informative talk by Prakash on how the people live and build their homes. Bamboo is used for the main structure, elephant grass and mud mixed with cattle dung, for binding, for the walls and the slat windows are made from the stems of elephant grass as it is very strong. The roof is thatched with elephant grass, to which more is added every year until about 4 or 5 years, when it has to be replaced. The structure looks sturdy, warm and homely. The children we saw in one of the families' house were doing their school homework. English is a compulsory subject in Nepal.

We climbed a style over the fence to receive our first instruction about elephants as we were going to have so much to do with them over the next couple of days. Prakash was very knowledgeable on the subject and gave us a lesson on elephant husbandry, behaviour and training.

Back to the resort for one of the many delicious meals we were to have while we were here.
