5.9.06
Quetta
Pakistan

Our four vehicles were on the road by 6:15am, before the village became too busy. Casper in a MAN truck with a long wheel base led the way. Kees and Els next in a Mercedes Unimog also decked out as a home but with short wheel base. Then Lou and Lynn in their Mercedes 100MD, and we were bringing up the rear in our Nissan Patrol. All vehicles use Diesel fuel.

During the course of the day, we had many armed escorts from district to district and had to sign in and show our passports to the Police in small mud huts along the way. It was difficult to see the rope, chain or cable across the road and the first time we encountered it, we left quite a bit of rubber on the road trying to stop in time. The officers don't mind if we take their photos and are very friendly. You can also check the book to see who else has passed by that day or the previous day. That's how we saw Jitke and Robert's name whom we'd met in Ankara and we hoped we might meet them in Pakistan.

So the road was good and bad. Many sand drifts and broken bitumen areas caused us some concern. A bus spun out on a sand drift and was stuck. The trucks here are beautifully decorated and have all sorts of dangly bells and whistles and things on them. They also have their music speakers on the outside so as they pass us when we are stationary, we can hear their music.

We only managed 350 kilometers in convoy this day with so many stop starts and bad road conditions and waiting for escorts etc. Finally we arrived in Quetta at about 4:30pm and drove straight to The Bloom Star Hotel to park our cars safely, on Casper's advice as he's been here before. It's comforting to have someone with us who knows the conditions and to travel in a larger group.
To our great surprise Robert and Jitke were already checked into the hotel. We were delighted to see them again.
It's not your 5 star hotel, but has large gates, is quiet and has hot water. It will do for a night or two.
