Esfahan

2.9.06
Ava's birthday

Des tried to get the satellite phone working this morning, without any luck, as the pin code he entered was incorrect. Lou tried to ring home from a call box and from a local man's mobile phone without success.
I must admit I was feeling pretty down about this because we have had such good contact until now. And this was a special day, as Ava turns 3 today. I felt very flat all day and think it was probably my lowest point of homesickness so far. The following day would be Father's day, how would I give Dad a call?

We had to cover 703 kilometers today to get to Kerman before sunset. Our time was running out in Iran and we had to get to the border before Sunday. Lou wanted to go into Esfahan, which is one of the prettiest cities in Iran and had been highly recommended to us. Little did we know that Esfahan has a traffic problem (we should have guessed) and we did not leave until mid day.

It is a really lovely, peaceful city and out of the few I've been to in Iran, it's my favourite. It is clean and a little cooler than Tehran, but the people are just as friendly and curious. The women of Iran must cover up completely with just face, hands and feet showing. It is the law in this land. I understand there is a prime minister and a cabinet who prepare legislation for the Mullahs to have the final say before any new law is passed.

By 7pm we decided to call it a day with the driving having covered 523 kilometers. The sun had set and Lou could see the green lights of a mosque in the distance. We asked if we could stay in the grounds of the mosque and the security guard said it wouldn't be a problem. It was a nice quiet spot and we sat up awhile to watch the bats diving for insects around the security lights.
