We were pretty seedy the next day but still managed a visit to Urk with Wilma & Kees. Urk is a fishing village and they had a salted herring eating competition. Last years' winner ate 29 herring in ½ an hour. The Olie Bollen were too delicious (kind of a sweet dumpling fried in oil and sprinkled in icing sugar). Great for the taste buds but hang heavy on the hips.
There's a little winery starting up here called Wijngaard Maronese which is going to get some pretty cute boutique wines out in a year or so (check on the web). Well worth a visit for travelers to Holland. Thanks for a lovely time Roland, Riek en Cor.
We shared coffee in Wilma and Kees's kids homes, Astrid and partner Claus, Sander and Amanda (and later at Siem & Jelna's with their beautiful children Jort & Mare). Astrid had invited us to an outdoor concert in Blokzijl where the stage was set over the water in the harbour. Claus's brother Wim was singing too and the whole sound across the water was brilliant.
