We were so excited to have a nice day for driving! As we rolled into Alabama the Beautiful, the state seemed to live up to its name right away. Bright blue skies, rolling green hills and sparkling stretches of water here and there. So far, a lot of these states do not look at all what we were expecting – I don't know why, because I didn’t have much prior knowledge of any of these places, but I was expecting things to look a lot more flat, and less green (well, I expected green in Kentucky and it certainly was). But Tennessee and Alabama were much more lush and rolling than I thought they would be, very pretty drives.

We stopped for a break at the Alabama Welcome Centre in Elkmont at the same time as several busloads of troops were doing the same. That’s one difference form home – the presence of troops is so noticeable. They did almost all the security and traffic directing at the Derby and at almost every quick stop we see a few, if not a bus, of troops.

When I went into the women’s washroom, it was jammed with troops – I have never seen so many female soldiers at once. They all looked young – 20s mostly, and 30s – pretty and fit. Exchange the camouflage uniforms for shorts and t-shirts and they would look like the Alabama State U volleyball team.
