Where I stayed
Tasman Bay Backpackers
The best hostel so far, we stayed for several days at Tasman Bay Backpackers, where amazing chocolate pudding and ice-cream are served every night!!! Needless to say this featured heavily in my journal, most entries beginning with "Only 10 minutes until choc pud time, so must be brief..."! Obviously that wasn't the only reason we loved it, the staff were great, the facilities were good, it was a fantastic place to stay. Nelson is a lovely city/town, great vibes and actually not a bad night-life, as Nim & I found out. It was a great place to base ourselves around Nim's walking in the Marlborough Sounds, my trip up to Golden Bay and Ali & Jules on their epic 7 day hike around the Nelson Lakes (during which they ran out of food, but not enthusiasm, so all happy!)
I spent a great day relaxing and reading on Tahunanui Beach on the edge of town - the sand here was so soft and white, beautiful. Also borrowed a bike from the hostel and cycled down the Maitai River to watch the fishies and swim in the pools further upstream - gorgeous. Unfortunately got eaten to death by sandflies whilst drying off on the river bank (probably serves me right), and even writing this now from Australia, almost 3 weeks later, they're only just fading, grrrrrr.
