Today we left Boston, hiring a Mitsubishi Endeavour at Boston airport and drove 1/2 hour to Salem, famous for the 1692 Salem Witch Trials. In 1692 Colonial New England was gripped by hysteria. A few girls accused hundreds of people of witchcraft, persecution, bodily harm and pain. The system at the time allowed spectral evidence which made it impossible for the accused to defend themselves. During the course of the 10 months friends were ostracized, challenged and eventually 20 innocent men and women were hanged.

We had breakfast in Salem on a little park square which had a statue to Elizabeth Montgomery of Bewitched fame! Of course the heavens opened and rained on us as we tried to do the Salem tour. Ended up visiting the Witch House 17th century home of Judge Jonathon Corwin one of the judges to preside over the witch trials.

Visited The House of the Seven Gables built in 1668 Americas oldest wooden mansion and used as inspiration by author Nathaniel Hawthorne for his novel "The House of the Seven Gables". We enjoyed this tour of a beautifully preserved house which is perfectly situated fronting Boston harbor. I especially loved the "secret, hidden staircase which is not for the claustrophobic"!

Next stop was Concord, Massachusetts where we visited Orchard House, home to one of my favorite authors, Louisa May Alcott. It was at this house that she wrote "Little Women". We enjoyed a lovely 45 minute tour of the house which is now a museum and holds many of the Alcotts furniture, paintings and memorabilia.

Onto the Flume Gorge at Franconia Notch State Park, 2 hours drive north in New Hampshire. Unfortunately it started to pour with rain and thunder so we may have to revisit in the morning.

Staying the night in a beautiful inn in Vermont in East Burke. Dinner at Willys Restaurant where I had pork ribs, fries and coleslaw.
