Where I stayed
San Simeon Lodge
Having arrived at San Simeon in one piece (each) we went to the liquor store - as you do - to buy postcards, chocolate and other good things to eat, and go to bed
When we woke up in the morning it was a grey, drizzly day so we rugged up and got ready to be amazed at Hearst Castle....photo's don't do it justice at all, it is magnificent. The property takes up something like 700 square km's of beautiful, green, undulating land, 80 or 90 km's of it coastline.
Where the house is built at the top is called La Cuesta Encantada (the Enchanted Hill), and it looks down over the hills with a view to the coast. Around the Castle were built three guest houses; the whole property has 37 bathrooms! Two pools are built within the landscaped gardens, with Roman columns and statues, and underneath the tennis courts they built a Roman Baths area. Anything that looked like gold, was. Some of the ceilings are 14th century Spanish and the whole place is filled with antiques, tapestries and art. Many movie stars and celebrities stayed on the Enchanted Hill, and the actress Marion Davies actually moved in and had a long affair with William - his wife eventually moved out.
We could've stayed all day
We then backtracked up the coast a bit to see the elephant seals on the beach; Viv made friends with some squirrels - I was concerned she'd start singing and that bluebirds would circle around her head.....the seals were all on the beach, making a racket, babies snuggling up or drinking from their mums, males bellowing and thumping chests with other males and rampantly mating with whatever female took their eye before falling asleep with one flipper over her middle. Hmmmmmm.
When we tore ourselves away from them we headed on to Los Angeles.
