The next day we took the train to Werfen to visit the Ice Caves. It was quite an adventure! From the train station we had to walk 5 minutes to meet a bus that took us up the mountain to the ticket office. Then we walked 20 minutes to a cable car (3 minutes straight up!) then at least 20 more minutes walk past the restaurant to the entrance to the caves. The path wound up side of the mountain. Once we got to the mouth of the caves, they told us the tour of the caves would be 1 hour and ten minutes long and would involve 700 stairs up (over 100 meters in height) and then 700 stairs down!! (Then also all the walking down the mountain as well....) But it was totally worth it! The ice caves were really beautiful, with huge, naturally created ice sculptures, made by water dripping into the caves and freezing again during the spring thaw. It was very strange to be in such large caves, but still know there was so much mountain above you, and to walk through tunnels made of ice. At the top, you could look down and see people far below at the bottom of the first cave. We couldn't take pictures in there, but you can see lots of pictures on their website www.eisriesenwelt.com and I took lots of the view from the mountain!
