The next day we got up early to go on one of Innsbruck's free gilded hiking trips (a great deal, despite the unfortunately early start - 9 AM on vacation! sick.) The Austrians don't mess around with hiking. On the "easy" hike, we hiked up hill for 2 1/2 hours before getting to our destination, a small mountain "hut" or restaurant. The food was good though! On the trip we also got to ride the funicular up and down the mountain (for free with the tour) which was also pretty fun
After the hike we tried to walk out to Schloss Ambras (a castle) but realized it closed earlier than we thought. (Fail).
We made supper and went out to a free concert at the Innsbruck "New Orleans Blues Festival". It was quite surreal to hang out by the Inn River with the mountains in the background listening to a band from New Orleans with a bunch of Austrians! There were definitely some interesting fashion choices in the crowd as well. A memorable random adventure!
On our last day in Innsbruck it rained again. We took the tourist bus out to Schloss Ambras and saw lots of suits of armour and paintings from the 1500's. It was very cool. The Archduke who had built it collected "curiosities" and had basically built his own museum back then of things he found interesting and paintings of his family (The Hapsburgs).
After a coffee stop, we took the bus back to town and visited the Imperial Palace. It was re-designed by Empress Maria-Theresa in the 1700's and is full of pictures of her 16 children (!!) and grandchildren. It's very cool (unfortunately no photography allowed). Then we had dinner in a really nice, small Italian cafe, since we're actually pretty close to Italy.
