I had booked a door to door minivan service to take me to Pangandaran and when it arrived I was informed I was the only passenger, so for less than 7 euros I had an air-conditioned 6-seater all to myself! The driver seemed to be in an awful rush and instead of taking around 7 hours it took us 5 and a half, it was a little hair-raising but I got there safe and sound.
Once in Pangandaran, the driver had trouble finding the guesthouse I had booked, he stopped and asked a friend, who jumped in and off we went again in search. When we eventually found the place there was no one there except a lone Indonesian woman and no trace of my booking. After several phone calls, I was offered a room for 4 times the Internet price. I forfeited my deposit and went in search of somewhere new. Mini Tiga home stay is a great little place but they were full and so I went to another place next door and checked in. I stayed just one night and checked into Mini Tiga the next morning.
I had my own little bungalow, which faced onto the garden and was only 100m to the sea...perfect. I decided at that moment that I was going to stay there until I had to get back to Bandung to catch my flight to Singapore, which was in 10 days time. A little beach holiday to round up my time in Asia.
On the first day, I met some great people and in the evening we all went to a beach bar and started on the beers. The bar had live music and later in the evening lit a bonfire on the beach. I think we staggered back to the guesthouse at around 03.00hrs. I have to admit it but the next morning I was really rather hung over!! I spent the day drinking water and having little lie downs :-s
In the evening, we decided to go to the bar and a girl who I had met in Bandung joined us. None of the group were feeling great still and after my beer refused to go down and then Rowan's too we worked our way through the juice/shake list!!!
Going to this bar (Mungil's) became routine and I think every night bar one I was there!!
My days were mainly spent chilling, reading and walking on the beach. On one of my days, me and a Dutch guy, called Peter, hired mopeds and went out to explore. We went to the turtle conservation centre, where I held one but not for long, as I was not sure how kind it was. After this, we went to Green Canyon, we took a long boat down thd river to reach it and then we were able to swim, this was really great and so beautiful. Next we were off to a small town renowned for surfing, called Batu Karas. It was pretty but not much there and by this time we were both hungry.
For lunch, we stopped at a roadside vendor and had chicken sate and rice, which was lush and only cost about 50 cents. In the afternoon, we went all around little villages and occasionally became lost but the ride was really fun (just a shame it was a moped and not something bigger).
When we returned to Pangandaran, we headed for the bar...exploring is very thirsty work ;-) Our Belgium friend joined us and that was where we stayed!!
On another evening, the guys had a fish BBQ at the guesthouse and afterwards we sat around chatting and a a couple of the guys had guitars and played and sang. Many beers were consumed (of course) and fun times were had by all.
Not much else happened, Pangandaran is a very quiet town and besides from drinking, socialising and surfing (not that I did) there is little to do except enjoy the beauty and the time spent with the people you meet.
