13-May:                Bergen  www.visitbergen.com/

Today we spent the day resting and walking around town.  We slept in late and left the B&B (www.skiven.no) around 11am.  We really needed that.  Bergen is beautiful. It has some very old sections. Don't forget, this is big Viking area.  We saw a group of women dressed in their regional costumes. We were told that they were celebrating someone's Confirmation. Their dresses were colorful and full of embroidery.  We also realized that Norwegians are very "religious" and serious about observing a day of rest - everything is closed on Sunday (including the churches).  We had a light lunch for $53 and coffee and dessert for dinner for a mere $25. We checked the prices at McDonalds and found out that for a Big Mac Value Meal you just pay 65 NOK ($10). We were lucky to find an open grocery store so we are better prepared now.  At the B&B we met a very nice couple from Arlington, VA and found out they will also be staying in the same Oslo B&B during the time we will be there. Small world!  Tonight we are getting to bed early so we can take the "Royal Fjord Tour" early in the morning.  This is expected to be one of the most beautiful in Norway.  Below is an excerpt from Fjord Tours booklet (www.fjordtours.com).

The Flam Railway
"The rain ride on the Flam Railway, a masterpiece of engineering, is one of the highlights of the tour.  The steep gradient [55%] is unique for a normal railway line and, in order to deal with the great difference in height, sections of the tracks have been laid in tunnels that spiral in and out of the mountain."

We know that it has 5 different braking systems so it should be nerve-wrecking enough.

Hey J&J
We loved the pix. It looks gorgeous. Also looks a little chilly. I know Julia must have loved all the snow ;) BTW, we checked the house today and your grass had been mowed and we put up the trash can. All else is fine. We miss you guys already. Halle got a new hair cut. I will send you an email with the pix attached. She looks so cute. Take care.

Love Craig, Susan, and Halle

I AM SO JEALOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I know you guys are cold, ubt I am still jealous. I want to go home, and your pictures makes me homesick. No, most of Norway is not so religious, haha, therefore the closed churches on Sunday (you are too funny)..............They just like to take the day off. Good Idea? I think so. Continue to enjoy, despite the prices.
