As soon as we crossed the Swiss / Italian border the differences were remarkable. The landscape changed and the well kept buildings and tidy farmlands were gone. We were struck by the run down look of the houses and the untidy streets which of course just added to the romance and charm of the country.
We had entered a magnificent world of tradition, history, food and, oh yes.... wine!
Our first stay was in Varenna, a very picturesque town on the shore of Lake Como, with steep winding alleys lined with charming homes, flowering balconies and lace-curtained windows. Our hosts were Stefano and Sevina at the lakefront Casa Blusole Apartment.  At night we drifted off to sleep to the gentle sound of water lapping on the shore..... Or had we just died and gone to heaven?
