Abu Simbel is located a 3 plus hour drive south of Aswan, just 40 km north of the Egyptian-Sudanese frontier. The Egyptian tourist ministry requires all those travelling to Abu Simbel to arrive via military convoy. All that really means is you are woken up at 3 AM driven to the rendezvous point to wait for clearance to drive south.

If you go to Egypt, visit Abu Simbel, it is fantastic!

To put it simply, Abu Simbel is unbelievable. The colossal statues are only a small part of the Abu Simbel. The carvings within the mountain are the real attraction. The detail and extent is astounding.

One thing about Abu Simbel we could not understand. It was moved from its former location at the base of a cliff overlooking the Nile. If you are going to move it, why not move it to a much more convenient location, like Cairo, London, or even Las Vegas?
