To represent the vague and general concept for which we use the word, "thing," the Chinese have combined the words for "east" (dong) and "west" (xi) to make the word dongxi. We took our own extreme dong-xi (in its broken-down sense) from the eastern centre of Shanghai to its western counterpart, Chengdu.
We visited the Giant Panda Breeding Centre just outside of town and saw the cuddly, lazy creatures "in action," if you can call their few daily hours of slow movement that. We did not get up to much else in Chengdu, but whiled away an afternoon in one of its myriad open-air teahouses. Drinking our bottomless cups of good, green tea and eating sunflower seeds, we took in our surroundings. Interesting highlight: an itinerant earwax remover. This man went from table to table, wielding his long metal hooks and offering his services. No thanks.
