We were here 2 nights. The center is lovely and we liked the place but we were not really long here. Just time enough to rent a car and do the 1 day excursion to Cachi.
In fact I would definitely recommend renting a car to discover the whole region. With 5 or 7 days (if you have the finance of course) you could do a whole tour around the region especially doing the road to/from Cafayate (ruta 40) that we couldnīt do as we didnīt find a tour.
We were searching for a tour in Cafayate to go to Cachi via the Ruta 40 and then via the ruta 33 to go to Salta but they just didnīt find enough people to do it.
We did the Ruta 33 from Salta to Cachi and that is very spectacular but we missed the Ruta 40 that is said to be spectacular as well. Then you could go up north to Pumamarca, Humahuaca and Iruya villages. This would definitely be a great experience.

Hemos pasado en Salta un total de dos noches, aunque no hemos podido disfrutar mucho la ciudad, ya que llegamos a mediodia y al dia siguiente hicimos la excursion a Cachi con coche de alquiler y el dia despues nos fuimos pronto para Tilcara. Sin embargo, la que puede considerarse como capital del norte de Argentina nos parecio una ciudad con mucho encanto y con muchas cosas para ver, especialmente la region que la rodea. Una buena manera de visitar la region es alquilar un coche durante una semana y de ahi hacer un tour y visitar Cafayate, Cachi, Jujuy, Purmamarca, Humahuaca y hacer la ruta del vino. En nuestro caso, como ya veniamos de Cafayate y ibamos hacia el norte pasando por Humahuaca y Purmamarca, alquilamos el coche solo un dia para ir a ver Cachi. Entre varias personas sale mas economico que un tour y te puedes parar donde tu quieres para hacer fotos.
Recomendamos el hostel en el que estuvimos, ya que esta muy centrico y tiene un ambiente muy acogedor (aunque demasiados ingleses para mi gusto ... o:)
