Arrived still feeling the pains of the Jebel Toubkal effort, and decided to spend at least 3 days here doing nothing. So after crashing at the cheap Hotel Smara, every day was taken up with first looking for something to eat, then I wondering around town. Essaouira has become very touristy and for a good reason, it has a fantastic varied coast line and the medina it large enough to get lost in but small enough to retain a strong communal feel about it.

Time well spent sitting on the jetty watching the boats come and go while reading a newspaper and chatting to the surf casting locals. However the Moroccan commerce was ever present and was becoming a bit tiring.

It was at Essaouira that I started thinking about my approaching trip down through the Western Sahara and into Mauritania and the necessity of having Euros to convert into Ouguiya (Mauritanian currency). Presenting myself at a bank I asked to convert my Dirhams to Euros, it was then that I found out that it was illegal for banks to provide euros to anyone but Moroccans who had already obtained a visa for a European country. This was going to become costly as I would need to convert my New Zealand dollars to Moroccan Dirhams to Euros and finally into Ouguiyas as in Mauritania there is no ATMs and I didn't obtain travellers cheques before leaving.

After the aches and pains were gone from the body I felt it was time to keep moving to continue my search for euros. In preparation for my trip south my next port of call is Agadir.
