Heidelberg...... is Germanys oldest university towns and one of the most charming. Beautifully situated in the lush green woodlands of the Neckar Valley east of the Rhine. It has long been the home of philosophers and poets and the centre of the German romantic movement It is stated that there s no other more romantic ruin in Germany than Heidelbergs castle The old city nestels below this magnificant ruined castle. One of Germanys most visited historic sites One of the special points of interst at the castle is the huge wine casks holding 50 000 gallons of wine.
Dispite the regions turbulant history most of the villages have been able to retain their historical charm The nectar Vally is also one of Germanys important wine regions and big industrial areas on both sides of the Rhine
Sights of interest......
Schlossgarten In the main courtyard, the facades of the Ottheinrich Wing and Fred the reerick building are especially notable
Schlossgarten... A short walk past the blown up tower to enjoy the breathtaking veiw over the city
Marktplatz....Opposite the 18th century city hall, the church of the holy spirit is a good example of a late Gothic hall church To the south the hotel Ritter has one of Germanys finest Renaissance facards
Kurpfalzisches museum .....Local history and archeology along with arts and crafts make the visit worthwhile, but the real draw is part of an alterpiece by Tilman Riemenschneider 1509.
Philosophenweg....Cross the lovely Old Bridge.and take the winding Schlangenweg path to veiw the memorable panaramas towards the castle,Old Town and river
During the afternoon we had free time to wander the shopping area many cafes and drinking houses A few fashion arcardes but quite expensive Found a wonderful xmas shop which we spent sometime in at but due to our luggage weight limit buying was a no no Did get some great ideas though .
Back to the boat for dinner and a most enjoyable concert performed by our very clever crew
