What a great day of riding we had today! Nice pavement, twisty mountain roads and moderate traffic. The scenery was spectacular ranging from mountain pastures, huge plantations of sugar cane and some corn too. We started out on a Hogback ridge road that went on forever. It took us 1.5 hours to go 65 K! And we were speeding! There was enough truck traffic to keep us slowed down and passing on double yellow all morning. Hell, we even passed the cops on double yellow curves! As Jene said to me over the radio system that we have finally figured out somewhat. `I don`t think there are any rules out here!
It was cool to start out, just perfect for riding with all of the protective gear. Then as the day progressed and we began our last decent it got warm. One hundred degrees warm! After most of the day in the mountains, some of the best roads we have been on yet, we flattened out into the farm country, Mostly sugar cane which makes for interesting riding when you come into a curve and find it littered with cane stalks!
We made into Cali, a dirty poor city at sunset. We found the town square with the help of a taxi. We booked a room at the hotel next to the Government Palace. It is very well used in all respects. We settle in and go get some dinner. We are pan handled all of the way. We can`t finish our food so ask the waitress to give us a to go box. She knows what we are going to do so piles my dinner of spaghetti into a plastic bag and we give it to a hungry young man. When Rene gives his up, the hungry woman produces her own bowl from her dirty bag, as she knows the cafe will not let her enter on to the property. Well at least two soles will have some relief in their bellies.
As I was typing Rene and Fern went for a walk, they returned after a very short time to tell me that a man came up to them and warned them that there were armed robbers in the area and that they should not walk around and linger. Advise well headed! We are out of here tomorrow, headed for a new border, do you know which country is next
We were stopped to ask directions, When Rene got off his bike it fell over on the fight side as soon as he let it go . He has foot pegs and a crash bar on it so there was only a few scratches. That means all of us have dropped our bikes. Not uncommon for this type of trip. Fern had dropped his in the driveway of the Bamboo Guest house in a no speed tip over, I believe this went unreported until now. Well at least we got that out of our system!
