April 26

Today, I woke up late! Fernando and I grabbed a cafe at one of the bars and then headed to the deck for some fresh air. The deck was pretty cool! The wind was blowing the hardest I have ever experience before in my life, so hard, I was slipping when I walked! I had to lean forward or backward to hold myself up against the wind! After taking a walk around the ship, I headed to the lounge area to check out the view. The ship passed through a very narrow straight between Corsica and Sardina. It was really cool to see both islands! They were both very beautiful! I then headed back to the cabin to chill out and take a shower.

Two hours before arrival, we were asked to come up to one of the decks so the ship's cabin could be cleaned. Fernando and I hung around the lounge until the ship docked in Civitavecchia. It was interesting because all these high school students were shouting and chanting in the lounge like it was an FC Barcelona football game. Pretty interesting entertainment! When the ship docked, Fernando and I went down to one of the 3 decks of the ship that held the trucks and cars. We had to navigate our way through a series of rows of massive 18 wheelers before finding Fernando's van. We waited for roughly an hour before we could get the van out of the deck. Once we finally exited the ship and cruised out of Civitavecchia, the first order of business was to find some true Italian brick oven pizza! After searching high and low we had to settle for a small family run restaurant on the side of the road. To our luck, we had one of the best pizzas I have ever had in my life! After getting our fill, we headed off for Rome.

It only took us about 45 minutes to get from the restaurant to Rome. We arrived in Rome around 11:30 PM. We drove right by The Vatican, which was lit up beautifully before crossing the river to get to the station. We then parked the truck and headed off to find me some accommodations. After searching for about 30 minutes I checked into a nice 3 star hotel, Hotel Hollywood!, for 40 Euro a night and only two blocks from the station. After settling in, Fernando and I set out to see some sites. We first stopped to pick up some gelato. The gelato stop was right in front of St. Maria Maggiore Cathedral, which was amazing! After our gelato, we decided to check out the Colosseum, which was only 5 minutes away. When I saw the Colosseum for the first time, the sight literally took my breath away! It was around 1 am, so there was only a few people around. After walking around the entire structure and snapping a few pictures, Fernando dropped me off at my hotel and took off for Cassino and I hit the sack to wake up early to catch a train for Bologna!
